Malo kolo (small kolo dance) is performed in a closed or open circle, where dancers are connected in a so-called Vojvodina grip, in which the female dancers hold their hands on the male dancers’ shoulders, while male dancers hold each other's hands behind the female dancers’ backs. Dancing in the kolo circle is based on symmetrical movement: two steps after the right hand, then two steps after the left hand. Dancers participating in the performance belong to different generations and genders. One specific feature of this dance is noticeable gender division, where the variations of the dance structure and phrasing in men are based on spatial-agogic nuances, while the women’s way of dancing is based on rhythmically varied hops.
