This custom includes ritual establishment of relationship between children/youth at the level of brotherhood/sisterhood. It is performed on Radonitsa Monday, which also bears alternative names of Drugarični, Kumačni or Kumačin Monday after this ceremony. The custom is less often performed on Easter or Antipascha (Thomas Sunday).
The ritual is usually performed in the afternoon and is attended by children and their parents. It takes place on the bank of a river, a stream, near a spring or in the center of a village. The participants wear wreaths, usually made of willow twigs and flowers, which they weave at home or on ritual site.
Friending is performed between children of the same gender and age. Parents start performing friending rituals while children are still very young, and for their friends they choose children of the same age where both sets of parents are in good relations with each other. In this way, there is a change in the mutual social relations of the participants and the establishment of strong bonds within the community. The older children may choose their own friends and can have several friends (drug or pobro).
The friendship is renewed every year, usually until puberty.
