"Kolo", a traditional folk dance in Serbia, has been nominated for the inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision on the nomination of the kolo was made by the National Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Serbia, while the preparation of the nomination dossier was coordinated by the Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage at the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade.
The nomination of this exceptionally vital element of intangible cultural heritage for the inscription on the UNESCO Representative List is proposed by the Kolo Folklore Ensemble, the Department of Ethnomusicology at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade and the Centre for the Research and Preservation of the Traditional Dances of Serbia (CIOTIS/CRPTDS).
The nomination of the kolo is supported by local communities, cultural institutions, numerous folklore ensembles, tourist and non-governmental organizations, as well as individuals, the bearers of this element of cultural heritage.
The nomination dossier, prepared in accordance with the standards concerning the content and technical requirements, was submitted to the UNESCO office in charge of receiving submissions for possible inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.
