Double-stranded knitting is a technique of making socks by using wool produced within the household, where two wool strands in different colors are entwined together so they form a double-stranded ornament. A sock is knitted by using 5 knitting needles, starting at the toe-tips and continuing to the heel. After that the upper part of sock (gornjište) is made in extension of the lower part, forming a unique spatial and ornament composition.
Double-stranded knitting of socks is a skill mostly performed by women, and as a part of living heritage it was preserved in Timok area, in municipalities of Knjaževac, Zaječar, Svrljig and Sokobanja.
