National Committee for the Intangible Cultural Heritage Established

The National Committee for the Intangible Cultural Heritage, as a body of the Ministry of Culture in charge of the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage and implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, has been established pursuant to the decision of the Minister of Culture issued on March 7, 2011.
The National Committee for the Intangible Cultural Heritage has been established to adopt and prepare a strategy for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Serbia, participate in harmonizing national legislation aiming at inclusion of the intangible cultural heritage and adopt proposals for inscription in the National Registry of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as those for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List and the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
It is also the task of the National Committee to monitor the implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and prepare an annual report submitted to the UNESCO Committee in charge of the implementation of the Convention.

Pursuant to the decision on establishment of the National Committee, Dusica Zivkovic, Assistant Minister of Culture, ethnologist, and Museum Advisor, has been appointed as president. PhD Mirjana Detelic, Professor of World Literature, Scientific Advisor, the Institute for Balkan Studies of SASA; PhD Ljiljana Gavrilovic, ethnologist, the Ethnographic Institute of SASA; PhD Olivera Vasic, ethnochoreologist, the Department of Ethnomusicology, the Faculty of Music in Belgrade; PhD Danijel Sinani, anthropologist, the Department of Anthropology and Ethnology, the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade; PhD Mila Popovic Zivancevic, archaeologist, Director of the Central Institute for Conservation in Belgrade; Bojana Andric, dramaturgist, Editor, Radio Television Serbia; Biljana Djordjevic, M.A., archaeologist, Museum Advisor, the National Museum in Belgrade; Vladan Radovanovic, art historian, theologian, Director of the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church; Mila Karas, Museum Advisor, the Museum of Natural History in Belgrade; and PhD Dragoljub Ackovic, ethnologist, Director of the Museum of Roma Culture in Belgrade, have been appointed as members.

Olivera Ignjatovic, Advisor, the Sector for Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Culture, and Asja Draca Muntean, Independent Advisor, the Sector for Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Culture, have been appointed as secretary and coordinator of the National Committee respectively.

The National Committee is an integral part of the national network for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage that also includes the Commission for Inscription in the National Registry of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Center for the Intangible Cultural Heritage with the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, and seven regional coordinators for the protection of the intangible cultural heritage.
